Emergency IT Lesson 1: Figurative Language

Take this kiss upon the brow!
And, in parting from you now,
Thus much let me avow--
You are not wrong, who deem
That my days have been a dream;
Yet if hope has flown away
In a night, or in a day,
In a vision, or in none,
Is it therefore the less gone?
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream.

I stand amid the roar
Of a surf-tormented shore**,
And I hold within my hand
Grains of the golden sand--
How few! yet how they (sand) creep**
Through my fingers to the deep,
While I weep--while I weep!*
O God!* can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp?
O God!* can I not save
One from the pitiless wave**?
Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?

*Hyperbole

The repetition of ' While I weep, while I weep' and 'O God', shows and emphasizes on his feelings – the sadness and desperateness.

**Personification

The poet writes that the shore has been tormented by the waves. By giving something that does bit have feelings feelings, it is a example of personification. Another example is the ' pitiless waves'. The poet tries to bring out the feeling that the waves are brutal and unrelenting, to show that it is a difficult task to overpower and 'win' the waves.

(p.s. the others are not in the content of the poem)

I like this poem not because there are only 2 points that are present in the poem, but because the poem flows nicely like a story. Its is really easy to understand, and is not like the other poems which are abstract at times. I also like the personification of the poem. It is meaningful and it effectively bring forth the point that the poet is trying to express.
